Advanced physiotherapy practitioner (APP) roles are rapidly expanding in all regions of Canada. Physiotherapy practitioners directly order medical imaging and laboratory tests and refer patients directly to medical and surgical consultants for both injection and surgical management.
This hybrid course delivers a 10 unit online learning program designed to prepare APPs to select appropriate candidates for: diagnostic imaging, laboratory testing, facet injection, epidural injection, selective root blocks, and surgical management of both spinal and peripheral MSK dysfunction. A 2-day intensive in-person skills development and examination prepares participants with the skills wanted by health organizations seeking candidates for APP positions.

The 10-unit online program will review Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory Testing, Medical Screening, Pharmacology as well as the most sensitive and specific objective testing to appropriately identify patients require medical interventions for both spinal and peripheral pathology .

The in-person Triage part of the course is where participants will learn to the handling, and clinical reasoning for assessing:
1) The Lumbar spine and SIJ
2) Cervical Spine and Thoracic Spine
3) Hip
4) Knee
5) Foot/ankle
6) Shoulder
7) Elbow
8) Wrist/hand

The assessment approach will NOT focus on rehabilitation, but will instead focus on appropriate selection for medical interventions like those listed above.

Clinicians who have completed the; KCS Medical imaging, Medical screening, Pharmacology and Laboratory testing online programs and the Medical /Surgical Triage course and examination are awarded a certificate of Advanced Physiotherapy Practice.
