KCS Core Courses
Clinical Skills offers 4 “Core Courses” to assist physiotherapists with advancing their clinical reasoning and skill sets. The courses are a combination of online learning as well as in-class practical training. Through on-line learning, we can maximize your in-person learning experience so that you will be prepared to use these skills on Monday morning!
These Core Courses are offered year round so check back often to see when and where you can register for them!
Lumbar / Sacral Management Course
Course Description
This course will cover the material you need to effectively screen and select patients eligible for manipulation in the Lumbar Sacral region and you will be taught how to effectively deliver manipulation in this area. You will be using the “reversed classroom” to participate in this course. First, you will learn the theory on-line, at home at your own pace. Second, you will come to a weekend intensive course where 80% of your learning will be hands on so that you DO NOT have to listen to theory, you can do, Do DO!
You will be given access to 10 on-line units that will cover the theory and background necessary to safely and effectively utilize manipulation.
Following 4 weeks of on-line preparation, you will attend the 2-day, in-person weekend intensive course where we will concentrate on skills acquisition and hands-on learning. We will cover the practical components of manipulation in the lumbar sacral region and give you a chance to see, learn and show how to competently manipulate the lumbar sacral region.
Cervical / Thoracic Management Course
Course Description
This two-part course will review the theoretical knowledge and background learning related to manual therapy and manipulation of the cervical and thoracic spine with a 4- week on-line distance-learning program. Then the participant will attend a practical, in-person course that will help them gain psycho-motor skill competency in the practice of manipulation of the cervical and thoracic spine.
The on-line course consists of 9 audio-power point presentations.
Following the on-line course, participants will attend a weekend intensive course to gain the skills of assessment and manipulation of the cervical and thoracic spine. This course will focus on the clinical reasoning and motor learning required to effectively integrate manual physical therapy examination and intervention techniques into the clinical management of these individuals. Specifically, participants will have a chance to see, be instructed in and demonstrate proficiency in manipulation. Selected techniques will be taught for each area of the cervical and thoracic spine to allow participants to have options for working in different areas of the spine.
Upper Extremity Management Course
Course Description
This two-part course will focus on the neurophysiological assessment and treatment of the shoulder girdle and the elbow. The theoretical material needed to successfully complete the two-day weekend intensive (described below) will be provided through a 4 week on-line learning platform that you will have access to in order to work at your own pace in the comfort of your home.
The online component will consist of 7 units.
The two-day lab intensive course focuses on the clinical reasoning and hands-on skill development necessary to effectively integrate manual physical therapy examination and intervention techniques into the clinical management of these individuals. Classification systems, outcomes assessment tools, and the application of diagnostic imaging are discussed as components of the diagnostic process within the framework of evidence-based practice. Participants will receive hands-on demonstration and practice of both examination and selected interventions of the shoulder and the elbow. A heavy focus is placed on the skill development and proficient use of mobilization, manipulation and neurophysiological based exercise to promote functional improvement in these regions. Most importantly, you will be able to apply this clinically relevant information in your practice tomorrow!
