Course Description:
This program has been developed to prepare Physiotherapists to work at the top of their scope of practice in MSK care. This distance-learning program delivers over 50 contact hours of self-paced learning through four comprehensive courses: Imaging foundations, Imaging spine, Imaging Extremities, Imaging Utilization supported by videos and additional resource materials.
Participants will be grounded in diagnostic imaging concepts for the musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neurological systems. The imaging views and modalities for each of these systems and common pathologies as seen on diagnostic imaging will be detailed. Clinical utilization guidelines, practice recommendations and delivered with quick reference summary tables provided in the 1500 + page handout which may be downloaded and saved for future reference. You will test your knowledge with 20 multiple choice questions that have been randomly chosen from a larger list at the end of each of the first three units. You are required to answer 80% of the questions correctly to advance to the next unit, but can repeat the test to achieve competency as needed. The course has a strong focus on utility and optimal utilization of diagnostic imaging in clinical practice.
The program has been developed and is being delivered by Key Clinical Skills, a recognized leader in post-professional education for Physiotherapists in Canada. A certificate of completion is provided for your professional portfolio. Physiotherapists who have previously completed this course order imaging while working in Rapid Access Clinics in Ontario, at VCH in BC and at NSHA in Nova Scotia.

Course Objectives:
Upon completing the Medical Diagnostic Imaging Course, participants will:
1. Understand the key foundational concepts of Diagnostic Imaging and the formal rules governing the use of radiation on patients
2. Understand the risks of subjecting patients to radiographic studies
3. Understand the radiological evaluation and commonly seen pathologies of the Musculo-skeletal system
4. Understand the clinical indications, contraindications and limitation of various imaging modalities
5. Be able to fully integrate Diagnostic Imaging into clinical practice through the understanding of the roles of different health care professionals
6. Acquire the necessary skills, knowledge and competencies to order diagnostic imaging with the physiotherapy scope of practice including
a. Competency to choose appropriate studies
b. Review individual patients for indications and contraindications of specific studies
c. Assess radiation loads
7. Prepare for new emerging employment opportunities at the top of your scope of practice
Pre-Requisites:
This course is open to all Physiotherapists practicing in all areas of the healthcare system. Participants do not require prior experience in ordering medical imaging. As all program content is delivered online, reliable access to Internet services should be secured.

The program is delivered in four separate courses. Each is made up of 10 units with over 60 hours of instruction in total. You will have 30 weeks to learn at your own pace, in your own place, in your own time.
The total investment for all four courses is CAD $950.00 + applicable taxes. KCS offers discounts to selected employers. Ask your employer if their staff qualify.
The enrolment is continuous. You can start at any time. You do not need to wait for the next cohort intake.
The program is self-paced. Once you enroll you have access to the full program for a full 30 weeks. Extensions can be provided on a valid as-needed basis on request.
There is an extensive 850+ page downloadable handout to keep as an ongoing resource. This includes quick references, cheat sheets, supplemental readings and external links to imaging resources.
Physiotherapists from Nova Scotia and British Columbia who work in Advanced Practice Roles and have completed our imaging programs currently order imaging. Physiotherapist from Quebec who have completed the approved Quebec version of our program are eligible to apply for rostering to order imaging in Quebec.

The instructor is Dr. Jack Miller. Jack is a life-long learner with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto, a Graduate Diploma of Manipulative Therapy from The New Zealand Manipulative Therapy Association, a Master of Clinical Science from Western University in Canada, a Post-Professional Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine in the USA and is currently completing a Graduate Diploma in Musculoskeletal Medicine from the UK. He has received extensive training in Diagnostic Imaging from this extensive formal course work and ongoing residency under the direct mentoring of interventional Physicians, Radiologists and Surgeons. Jack has lectured extensively on the role of diagnostic imaging in Physiotherapy internationally and currently works as an Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner using diagnostic imaging as clinically appropriate.
