This course is suitable for physiotherapists and health professionals who want to improve their understanding of pain, its definition, types and mechanisms. In this comprehensive online module, Dr Tracey Pons, a Specialist Physiotherapist in Pain assessment and management, talks about these issues and more. The online module consists of pre-reading articles, a video presentation and a quiz.

In this course we will cover:

• Nociception and the protective mechanism normal resting state.
• Nocifensive behaviour.
• The transition of acute to persistent pain.

Learning Outcomes

Dr Tracey Pons, PhD, NZRPS
NZ Registered Specialist Physiotherapist (Pain)

Tracey originates from South Africa and now works in her own private physiotherapy practice in North Canterbury in New Zealand where she was registered as a Physiotherapy Pain Specialist in 2016. She was awarded a Master of Health Sciences, with distinction, in 2012. In 2016 she was awarded runner up for the New Zealand Pain Society Broadfoot award with her research in pain. In May 2019 she graduated with her PhD from the University of Otago where she undertook a longitudinal study looking at Physiotherapy outcomes for Complex Regional Pain Syndrome across the South Island of New Zealand.
Tracey has a passionate commitment to understanding persistent pain for all age groups; encouraging the collaboration between physiotherapists towards the management of pain. Tracey has presented at many local and international conferences about her research in persistent pain; has seven international journal publications and one, currently, under review.
