Then the participant will attend a practical\, in-person course that will help them gain psycho-motor skill competency in the practice of manipulation of the cervical and thoracic spine. \nThe on-line course consists of 9 audio-power point presentations which include:\n1) Vascular Risk in Cervical Manipulation and Treatment\n2) Red Flags for Cervical Manipulation and Treatment\n3) Introduction to Manipulation\n4) Manipulation of the Cervical Spine- the process\n5) Thoracic Spine Manipulation\n6) Yellow Flag Screening\n7) Introduction to the Treatment-Based Classification System of the Cervical Spine\n8) Patient Screen Assessment for the Cervical/Thoracic Spine\n9) Legislative Requirements for Manipulation\nThere are quizzes to complete following every two or three units to assess knowledge acquisition. \nFollowing the on-line course\, participants will attend a weekend intensive course to gain the skills of assessment and manipulation of the Cervical and Thoracic spine. This course will focus on the clinical reasoning and motor learning required to effectively integrate manual physical therapy examination and intervention techniques into the clinical management of these individuals. Safety and screening for appropriate candidates to discuss manipulation as an option are reviewed in detail. The evidence-based assessment of the cervical/thoracic region will be illustrated and practiced by participants to help classify patients into a treatment-based category. The five categories include Mobility\, Directional Preference\, Exercise/Endurance\, Pain Control and Headaches. The focus of the course will be on effective and safe assessment of patients to identify those patients who would most likely benefit from manipulation. Participants will have the opportunity to practice Cervical/Thoracic area manipulations including supine\, side-lying and seated techniques. The techniques covered include but are not restricted to the manipulations listed above. Once students have been guided in the refinement of the motor strategies for manipulation\, they will be asked to demonstrate competency for each manipulation covered in the course prior to having their skills checklist marked as competent. Audio-visual\, demonstration\, instructor guided application\, peer-review feed-back and case studies will be employed to promote learning prior to assessment of competency. This course will provide 14 hours of direct contact teaching related to the skill acquisition of manipulation.

He has also been invited to present keynote lectures at many international conferences. His main areas of research interest are rotator cuff tendinopathy\, frozen shoulder\, shoulder pain syndromes and lateral epicondylopathy. In addition to his own research he supervises PhD and MSc students. Jeremy is an associate editor for the journals; Shoulder & Elbow and\, Physiotherapy. He was a co-editor and author for Grieve’s Modern Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy (4th ed). \nThe Course \nThis evidence-based theoretical and practical course is based on extensive clinical experience in assessment\, diagnosis and rehabilitation of shoulder pathology\, as well as extensive reference to research publications from a variety of disciplines. Models of shoulder assessment including the Shoulder Symptom Modification Procedure (Lewis JS (2009) British Journal of Sports Medicine) and a new model for staging the continuum of rotator cuff tendinopathy (Lewis JS (2010) British Journal of Sports Medicine) will be presented. Emphasis will be placed on clinical reasoning to support management decisions. Participants completing these courses will gain a greater understanding of the anatomy\, biomechanics\, assessment and evidence-based treatment of this interesting and complicated region of the body. \nThis course remains a ‘work in progress’ and is continually being updated with the emergence of new research and clinical understanding. As a result\, many people have participated on two and some on three occasions. This course will be fun\, thought provoking\, and provide opportunity to discuss ideas and share experiences. \nLearning Outcomes \n\nTo develop a better understanding and knowledge of the clinical anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder girdle.\nTo develop a comprehensive subjective and physical evaluation strategy for the shoulder that considers local and referred sources of pain and directs the clinician to develop an appropriate management plan.\nTo develop greater confidence with the physical assessment of the shoulder region and a better understanding of the evidence for the use of the selected assessment techniques.\nTo gain proficiency in the Shoulder Symptom Modification Procedure.\nTo develop a greater understanding and knowledge of various pathologies of the shoulder girdle.\nTo develop greater competency in the management of patients with a variety of shoulder
pathologies including; the acute shoulder\, subacromial pain syndrome\, rotator cuff\, shoulder pain syndromes\, and pain referred to the shoulder.\nTo review the research evidence relating to the influence of posture and muscle imbalance and its
relationship with shoulder pathology.\nTo review the evidence underpinning the pathology\, and the assessment and management of
various shoulder conditions\, especially rotator cuff and biceps tendinopathy.\nTo review the research evidence evaluating the use of diagnostic imaging as part of the
management for musculoskeletal disorders of the shoulder.\nTo review the research evidence evaluating the use of injections as part of the management for
musculoskeletal disorders of the shoulder.\n\nTo develop a greater confidence in the use of exercise therapy\, hands on therapy and taping techniques for the shoulder and evaluation of the efficacy of the techniques\, balanced against the evidence base for using these techniques.
