Course Description

The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario has approved a list of 48 medical laboratory tests for Physiotherapists to be able to order following the enactment of Bill 179. Similar to other restricted activities, the ability to roster for this advanced practice activity is anticipated to be competency-based following specific training. New advanced practice opportunities are rapidly emerging for Physiotherapists in Family Health Teams, and the expansion of existing spine triage and arthritis care pathway programs. Medical imaging and lab testing are integral components the skill set of an advanced practice Physiotherapist.

This distance-learning program has been developed to prepare you to take on these evolving practice roles that will include the ordering of medical laboratory testing. This program provides over 15 contact hours of self-paced learning through 10 comprehensive audio-visual modules supported by extensive readings, case studies, videos and additional resource materials.

Participants will be grounded in medical laboratory testing concepts for all major body systems with a particular focus on the musculoskeletal, cardio-respiratory and neurological systems. The common pathologies for each of these systems as confirmed by medical lab testing will be detailed. Clinical utilization guidelines, practice recommendations are delivered with quick reference summary tables provided in the 375 page handouts, which may be downloaded and printed for future reference. A certificate of completion is provided for your professional portfolio and recertification provided biennially through an ongoing competency maintenance program. Access will be granted for 10 weeks.

Pre-Requisites:

This course is open to Physiotherapists practicing in all areas of the health care system. Participants do not require prior experience in ordering medical lab tests.  As all program content is delivered on-line, reliable access to Internet services should be secured.
